Transitions in Collections: Print to Digital Workshop Live Video Stream

Because MLA membership is so geographically diverse, not all professional development events are convenient for every member to attend. While the personal networking aspect of these events add dimension and value to the knowledge gained from speakers and sessions, it’s not always economically feasible to travel lengthy distances in order to participate. 
 
To that end, MLA is pleased to announce the addition of streaming video of two sessions of the Transition in Collections: Print to Digital Workshop on Friday, March 8th. Participants from across the state can register for live video access to the keynote presentation by Robin Nesbitt and the Publisher Panel discussion. Registration is on a per-site basis, with no limit to the number of participants per site. Members are encouraged to invite as many staff to view the stream as possible for one low price of $100 per site (non-member rates are higher.) Registration is available online or by calling 517-394-2774 ext. 227 and speaking with Judy McIntyre.

Robin Nesbitt, Collection Managment Director, Columbus Metropolitan Library, will present Digital Resources: Are Libraries on the Road to Oz? at the Transition in Collections: Print to Digital workshop on March 8 at Michigan State University. Robin’s keynote focuses on the obstacles faced by libraries in making digital content available to patrons, particularly eBooks. She’ll discuss what options are appearing on the horizon, and the public’s right to access digital content and the library’s role as the public voice.

P2D Breakout Session: Growing and Promoting Your Digital Collection

Kent District Library has one of the largest public library e-book collections in the state, along with digital magazines, music and movies. Melissa DeWild will share how KDL is growing and promoting its digital collection, including selection tips and practical promotion ideas, emphasizing the all-important task of educating users about the digital resources available to them. Be prepared to dialog with others and share your own ideas with the group.

What is Fedora Commons? Ever heard of OAIS? What do you know about API? How are all of these things related and what do they have to do with managing increasingly large amounts of digital materials? Cole Hudson and Graham Hukill of Wayne State University Libraries will share what they've learned while implementing Fedora Commons, the digital asset management system selected for WSU's unique digital collection, including large-scale digitization porjects and curated born-digital resources.
