Committees & Work Groups
Be an MLA volunteer!
The 2010-2011 Call for Volunteers form will be available in the spring.
Standing Committees and Work Groups
- Build your resume
- Develop your leadership skills
- Create professional development and networking opportunities
- Advocate for libraries
- Serve your profession
This is your chance to be involved with your peers in creating professional development and networking opportunities throughout the state, serve your profession and play a vital role in building the new MLA. There is a place for everyone to be involved at MLA.
Under the new MLA structure, you can volunteer for a Work Group that’s designing a professional development or networking event to meet a variety of member needs. Volunteer for an MLA Committee to plan and build a strategic and sustainable MLA. This year’s Work Groups are creating workshops being held throughout 2009. Future Work Groups may meet a variety of other needs defined by the membership and supported by the Board of Directors. New opportunities to volunteer will be explored and offered to keep MLA nimble and responsive to member needs. Bring your talents to MLA and grow your skills and leadership.
Your institution gains as staff members develop their leadership skills and create programming that, in turn, enhances patron services. A strong MLA will advocate for libraries throughout Michigan.
How do I volunteer for a Committee or a Work Group?
The 2010-11 MLA Call for Volunteers will be available in Spring 2010. It will be mailed to members and available on the MLA Web site.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any individual member of MLA is eligible to participate in a Work Group or Committee. Nonmembers interested in volunteering are welcome to join MLA. The volunteer makeup at MLA will be representative of the MLA membership. Consideration will be given to diversity in terms of job category, ethnicity, gender, geography and type and size of library. All library staff, trustees and friends are welcome and encouraged to join and participate.
What is expected of me?
Work Groups and Committees will meet on an as-needed basis to accomplish their objectives. Work Groups planning quality content for workshops will accomplish the majority of their work from August through December. Committees will generally meet once a month with subcommittees assigned specific responsibilities and timelines.
Volunteers are expected to attend scheduled meetings including any event or activity you help organize, miss no more than three meetings in one year, contact your chair if you are unable to attend, and complete assignments or projects assigned to you in accordance with the overall MLA strategic plan.
