Governor Amends EO- Addresses Many Library Community Concerns
/* if author/date info present display info */ ?>Governor Granholm amended her Executive Order to address key concerns of the library community, genealogists, and legislators on September 9, two days before it was scheduled to go into effect. The amended EO calls for: ‘continuing this state's vital role in maintaining and delivering online services libraries around the state...and the Michigan eLibrary and MeLCat; ‘preserving important collections maintained by the Library of Michigan, including the Michigan Collection, the Rare Books Collection, and the Genealogy Collection; and for key state departments to ‘actively cooperate to facilitate the continued operation of the Michigan Library and Historical Center and the preservation of the important historical resources and library collections maintained at the Center.
Amending the Executive Order is a major achievement for the library community. The Michigan Library Association will remain vigilant in its fight for funding as MeL and the ongoing state library operations are both ‘subject to available appropriations.' MLA will be recommending Library representation to the Michigan Center for Innovation and Reinvention Board which is charged with ‘consider(ing) potential ideas to preserve and maximize the benefits to the public of the existing Michigan Library and Historical Center...'.
