MLA will participate in a press conference Thursday, September 8 calling for guaranteed replacement of all personal property tax revenue if the tax is eliminated.  Coalition partners include: the Michigan Library Association, Michigan Municipal League,  Michigan Association of Counties, Michigan Association of School Administrators, Michigan Association of School Boards, Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union.  The Legislature and the Governor are working on eliminating the personal property tax (PPT) which would result in a tax cut totaling $1.2 billion.  The PPT is a tax on business but pays for local governmental services.  Libraries are already reeling from cuts to state aid, elimination of renaissance zone reimbursements and reductions in penal fines.  Elimination of the PPT without full replacement would result in library closings and significant reduction in library services throughout Michigan.  Read the complete media release.
